Criminal Justice students take over Avery County courthouse to get full judicial experience

Judicial Process and Court Ethics is a required class for all Criminal Justice majors and minors. According to Hoilman, all students who plan to work in the United States criminal justice system need to be familiar with how the court system works, even if they don’t plan to pursue a legal career. The mock trial provides that familiarity as well as an opportunity to build other valuable skills like research and public speaking.

Land and Environmental Art course seeks to build environmentally and globally conscious student artists

Each year, the Land and Environmental Art course (ART-130) at Lees-McRae seeks to address a global issue that becomes more and more pressing with each new cohort of students: climate change. In each class, Associate Professor of Communication Arts and Design Michael Iauch guides students through that year’s Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a lengthy annual report that, according to the report itself, “summarizes the state of knowledge of climate change, its widespread impacts and risks, and climate change mitigation and adaptation.”

Mountain Day of Service 2023 breaks new ground

On Wednesday, Oct. 18, students, faculty, and staff participated in a record-breaking Mountain Day of Service. The annual Lees-McRae tradition is a time for everyone at the college to come together and give back to their community through a day of volunteering. With a record-setting 37 sites and 492 volunteers, Mountain Day of Service was able to spread farther and wider than ever before.
